The company responsible for the Model S, Model X 60, and Model 60D, decided to temporarily extend the vehicles’ battery capacity to offer extra range and thus facilitate evacuations due to Hurricane Irma.

The update will be temporary and once the situation goes back to normal so will Tesla vehicles’ range. The measure is aimed at optimizing evacuation routes and the traffic due to Irma, according to Gizmodo.

Years ago, the company offered a purchase option for its first automobiles, in an attempt to make them more affordable.

The first buyers had the option to voluntarily reduce the 75 KWh battery capacity in exchange for a substantial discount. Subsequently, those who wanted to could pay the differential of $4,500-$9,000, depending on the model, to unlock the full battery power. This purchase option is no longer available.
